Since 2018, Art on Paper Amsterdam has been the leading Dutch art fair dedicated to contemporary art on, of, or with paper.<\/p>\n
At the request of many professionals in the sector, Erik Hermida (Onderneming & Kunst) launched a specialized fair for works on paper at the Zuiveringshal in Westergas. In 2018 and 2019, around 35 emerging and established galleries, mainly from the Netherlands, presented the very best that the paper medium had to offer.<\/p>\n
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the third edition of Art on Paper Amsterdam found a new platform in 2021 at KunstRAI in RAI Amsterdam. In a specially selected section of the fair, nine galleries presented their collections of paper-based art.<\/p>\n
As the number of participants grew, the fair moved in 2023 (4th edition) to the monumental Gashouder. This marked the beginning of the current concept, in which at least 40 percent of the participants are invited from abroad. This resulted in a more international overview of art on paper. The first \u2018Cutting<\/strong> Edge<\/strong>\u2019 booths were also introduced in 2023. Now a permanent part of the fair, these boothsallow galleries to showcase bold and innovative work by a single artist.<\/p>\n At the fifth edition in 2024, classical and modern art were included for the first time. Ten of the Netherlands\u2019 most prominent art dealers exhibited in the Transformatorhuis, located opposite the Gashouder, as part of the Classical<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0&<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Modern<\/strong> section.<\/span><\/p>\n The sixth edition of Art on Paper Amsterdam took place at a new venue: the Kromhouthal on the IJ waterfront. This former factory hall accommodated more than 45 galleries and art dealers. Since 2025, impressive large-scale paper sculptures and installations have been displayed throughout the hall under the title Paper Perspectives<\/strong>. These works demonstrate how paper, a lightweight material, can be transformed into monumental objects. The Signed & Numbered<\/strong> pavilion also provides space for editions on paper. From lithographs and etchings to screen prints and collages, these paper editions are refined, accessible, and highly collectible.<\/p>\n In 2026 (7th edition), the fair introduced a new visual identity: a logo, poster, and website that reflect what the event aims to convey: that collecting art on paper is a pleasure. Art on or with paper is not only distinctive from an artistic perspective, but is often also accessible and attractive in terms of size and price. The upcoming 2027 edition will once again demonstrate this during the eighth edition of Art on Paper Amsterdam. Beginning art enthusiasts may well make one of their first art purchases here.<\/p>\n Paper<\/strong><\/p>\n Paper plays an indispensable role in every artist\u2019s studio, where sketches and drawings on paper often form the starting point of the creative process. Whether it concerns detailed pencil drawings, colourful screen prints, delicate collages, or sculptures, the immediacy associated with this medium brings artist and viewer remarkably close together. The medium reveals the artist at their most spontaneous and creatively free moment, and this intimacy and vulnerability thrive under the exclusive attention they receive at this specialized art fair.<\/p>\n The annual presentation of around 45 galleries and art dealers, featuring more than 150 artists at Art on Paper Amsterdam, demonstrates how versatile and unique this medium can be.<\/p>\n Exhibitions<\/strong><\/p>\n Art on Paper Amsterdam aims to provide a platform for art on paper in many forms and formats. For this reason, various institutions, collectors, and museums have been invited by the organization to showcase the versatility of the medium.<\/p>\n In 2019, this included the private collection of paper-based art assembled by Jeanne and Arnoud Braat. The central exhibition in 2023 was organized in collaboration with the Chabot Museum Rotterdam and featured works on paper from the extensive private collection of the artist Armando. In 2024, the impressive exhibition Green Paper<\/em>, presented by the Vereniging Bedrijfscollecties Nederland (VBCN), brought together artworks by artists reflecting on the theme of sustainability. Drawing Dates<\/em> for artists were also organized in 2019 and 2023, giving artists the opportunity to present their portfolios to the Drawing Inventions Academy (DIA).<\/p>\n Since 2025, guest initiatives and participant exhibitions have made way for two new sections: Paper Perspectives and Signed & Numbered.<\/p>\n International<\/strong><\/p>\n Art on Paper is an international event: approximately 60% of participants come from the Netherlands and 40% from abroad. The upcoming edition will feature galleries from, among others, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Japan.
